So many things happened in this chapter of the book. It started off with a strike because the union and meat packing industry. That didn’t surprise me because of the conditions of their work and the pay they get for it. A result of the strike was that Jurgis became a scab and got attacked by some of the rioters. That was surprising to me, the scabs where just trying to make a living. In this time period money is power and scabs make more money than usual. I was really glad of this because now Jurgis got more money each week. Out of nowhere Jurgis got a promotion to foreman. A great thing happened, Jurgis now had a sustained job and really good pay. They had to bring in all sorts of people from lots of places to work for them. That was scary and surprised me. They brought in convicts and any who were willing to work. Finally the union and packing houses made a deal only for it to be broken when the packing houses didn’t hire any union leaders. I was happy for Jurgis because it meant he got to keep his job; It also surprised me that they went back to the strike so fast. The meat packing industry brought woman and booze to sell to black workers to keep them working. That is just deplorable that they would sell them woman, that’s basically slavery all over again. I can't believe the things that the meat packing industries would to to keep people working for them.
